The airports in Havana and Varadero have now reopened and the Meliá Cuba hotels at these destinations are becoming operational again.
Havana, 12 September 2017. Hurricane IRMA has affected various tourist destinations in Cuba in which Meliá Hotels International is present. Thanks to the coordination of the Cuban Authorities in implementing the necessary precautionary measures in preparation for the hurricane, we are fortunate in that no harm has come to any of our guests or employees. Precautionary evacuations were carried out and many guests returned to their home countries before the hurricane arrived. Those who remained in Cuba were moved to lower-risk locations such as Havana and Varadero.
With the reopening of the airports in Havana and Varadero, the situation in the Meliá Hotels International Cuba hotels is now returning to normal. The hotels in Havana, Holguín, Santiago de Cuba and Cayo Largo are now fully operational.
In Varadero most of the company’s hotels have suffered some minor damage and all services are being resumed. They will therefore be operating as normal within the next 24 horas. The Meliá Península Varadero was evacuated as a precaution and, in consultation with the owners, the decision was made to keep it free of guests in order to restore all services in as short a time as possible. Similarly, it was decided to temporarily close the hotel Paradisus Varadero in order to carry out some renovation work and improvements prior to the high season.
The situation in the northern keys is that access has now been re-established to Cayo Coco via the causeway that connects it to the mainland and efforts are also being made to re-establish access to Cayo Santa María. Making it our priority to repair the hotels that have been less seriously affected, the company will start with the operation on Cayo Coco, Cayo Guillermo and Cayo Santa María, for the high season. We will continue to update you on the situation in the northern keys as and when we have more information.
Meliá Hotels International Cuba will offer as much flexibility as possible so that guests with bookings for the period in which the hotels in Varadero and the northern keys are not operational, can cancel their bookings or be relocated to other hotels depending on availability.
