Sol Meliá Cuba Golf Cup will begin Friday
2009-10-20
Almost one hundred golfers from more than ten countries will compete in the Sol Meliá Cuba Golf Cup scheduled to begin next Friday morning. The tournament has been organized by the Meliá Las Americas Hotel and the Varadero Golf Club to mark the 10th anniversary of this 18-hole golf course. Canadá, Colombia and Argentina are the countries most represented in the event, followed by Panama, Italy, Spain, France and the Dominican Republic. Players will compete in stroke play. The highest net scorers, both male and female, will be awarded, as well as the closest to the pin in both sexes. The Callaway system will apply. The Varadero Golf Club was inaugurated on October 26, 1999. Its course was designed by Les Furber, president of Canadian company Golf Design Services Ltd and noted for its harmonious combination of classical styles, target golf and links, with the sea as yet another obstacle in the game. Another of its special features which make it practically unique in the world is the existence of various ponds connecting directly with the ocean. The 18-hotel, par 72 golf course has a 6 269 meters (6 856 yards) layout from the first Tee to the Green 18. Meliá Las Americas is located next to the Varadero Golf Club, the only hotel with direct access to the golf course, which together with its special programs and attention to golfers have made it the leading specialist of this passionate sport in Cuba.
